However, the Three Special It's Your Plane Facilities listed
above have been implemented to offer you... The Captain...
a sense of "TOTAL IMMERSION" in the cockpit, as well as in the cabin.
Rejected Takeoff!
Let's say you've got your Boeing 747-400 lined up on the centre line and you say to your IYP Co-Pilot, "Takeoff/Go Around, On."
The big "heavy" slowly begins to gather speed. A few hundred feet down the runway,
you hear Michelle say, "Eighty knots!" Now imagine a situation where something goes wrong!
What do you do? Before you hear Michelle say, "Rotate", you shout out...
The spoilers instantly snap to their fullest extention, reverse thrust is applied (unless an engine has failed),
the brakes are slammed on, and this 500,000 lb (225.000 kg) aircraft stops as fast as possible.
Once the "heavy" grinds to a halt (hopefully before you run off the end of the runway), Michelle says...
. . . well, I'm not going to tell you. You'll have to try it for yourself. (lol)
Backcourse Approach
I'm sure that nearly every It's Your Plane user who has flown jetliners has experienced the excitement of
turning onto base towards an ILS approach and hearing the First Officer ("FO") Michelle (or Mike) say,
"The Localizer's Alive", "The Glideslope's Alive", "Switching to ILS Approach Mode", "Locked on the Localizer",
"We've captured the Glideslope", etc. During all of this, the FO is reducing the airspeed appropriately, gradually
lowering the flaps and lowering the landing gear... all without intervention from you... The Captain.
Indeed, it is truly exciting!
But what about a Backcourse Approach? For example, you say to the First Officer Michelle...
Load the ILS Approach Frequency for Runway 25.
She responds with...
The chosen runway does not have an ILS approach. However, Navigation 1 is set to the backcourse
frequency of 123.5 for runway 250. Verify course setting.
As you turn onto base, you will hear, "The Localizer's Alive." However, you will NOT HEAR,
"The Glideslope's Alive.", which makes perfect sense, since there's no glideslope. Once
the First Officer says, "Locked on the Localizer", she will then say...
Captain. I have turned off the Altitude Hold so that you can control the rate of descent.
Now you get to use the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) system to visually control your rate of descent.
Michelle (or Mike) will still remain locked on the Localizer and take care of the flaps, airspeed, landing gear, etc., as per normal.
So... go ahead and do a Backcourse Approach!
Execute Going Around!
You came in far too fast and you're not going to be able to capture the glideslope! Oppssss!
No worries! Let your trusty Co-Pilot get you out of this mess. Simply say...
Michelle (or Mike) will pull up the gear, retract the flaps,
slam the throttles to the wall and climb to an altitude of 2,000 feet AGL.
Give it a try on the next approach... it's a really something to watch. And, it can easily get you out of a
SERIOUS jam when you REALLY need it!
Never Flown a Jetliner?
Incidentally, for those users who are comfortable with Michelle (or Mike)
while flying G/A aircraft, believe me when I say...
If you can fly a Cessna C172 with It's Your Plane,
then you can fly a Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jetliner!
It's the same thing... just a BIGGER plane. Simply run down the checklists and let's
Michelle help you through every phase of the flight... you'll love it!
I hope you find this information helpful.
Wishing you safe landings,
Robert Cezar
Your IYP Developer.
